The New Year Has Started, Now What?

It’s a relief that the new year has finally started.

The New Year isn’t just about time moving forward. It’s also about what more we want to do. Many people may make a list of resolutions but may not be able to achieve them. It can be due to procrastination or having impractical resolutions.

There’s a lot of uncertainty especially concerning the pandemic. However, things aren’t so bad as how it was two years ago. We have to learn to live with the virus while at the same time protecting ourselves as much as possible by wearing mask, avoiding crowded places and taking the vaccine.

So, how do we set up the right resolution for ourselves? By thinking about what is practicable for you to achieve in a given amount of time. Make a plan and be specific on what you want to do this year. For instance, if you want to loose weight, don’t just write down “I want to loose weight this year”. That’s because you aren’t being specific about how much weight and the time frame. You can rewrite it as “I want to loose ten pounds in two months” which is more reasonable because you have set up a more specific goal.

Another example can be if you want to do or learn something new like dancing or art. In this case you should ask yourself, why do you want to do it? Will it have a positive impact in your life? How regularly do you want to do it?

It may be that you want to have a new hobby or you want to have some skill which you can add to your portfolio or CV. Whatever the case, it has to be something that can be practical and beneficial to you. Maybe you want to be more active and learn something new. For instance, learning languages isn’t a bad thing. Even if you don’t travel much, you can learn a different language which you never know when it can be useful.

No one is perfect and we may still not be able to achieve our goals. That doesn’t mean we should give up. Give yourself some time, relax and try to make up for the lost time. Another way is to join a community with like minded people. There are many different groups to join on Facebook and other social media. You can get tips and encouragement from others who are also struggling to live up to their resolutions.

Finally, don’t ever give up. This is a chance to change and be a better you. It doesn’t matter how young or old someone is. Learning never stops.
